The new £26m Station Gateway redevelopment scheme will see the creation of a new station building housing a new concourse with modern facilities including 3 serviced (63 amp 3 phase electricity supplies, water and drainage) shell retail units together with 3 pop up retail opportunities. A new 400 space car park will also be constructed adjacent to the station. The scheme is part of a larger longer term £100m Sunderland Council backed investment plan to transform the transport interchange. As well as the station redevelopment scheme the City Centre is undergoing transformation that will see the creation of new retail and residential accommodation.

The interchange station is located in the heart of the city centre, adjacent to The Bridges shopping centre and a two minute walk from the high street. Rail services include Northern, Grand Central and Nexus (Metro) and local bus services.
